چکیده

We review the available estimates of the masses of the compact object in Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) and critically reconsider the stellar-mass versus intermediatemass black hole interpretations. Black holes of several hundreds to thousands of M are not required for the majority of ULXs, although they might be present in the handful of known hyper-luminous (∼ 10 erg s−1) objects and/or some sources showing timing features in their power density spectra. At the same time, however, stellar mass BHs may be quite a reasonable explanation for ULXs below ∼ 10 erg s−1, but they need super-Eddington accretion and some suitable dependence of the beaming factor on the accretion rate in order to account for ULXs above this (isotropic) luminosity. We investigate in detail a ’third way’ in which a proportion of ULXs contain ≈ 30−90M black holes formed in a low metallicity environment and accreting in a slightly critical regime and find that it can consistently account for the properties of bright ULXs. Surveys of ULX locations looking for a statistically meaningful relationship between ULX position, average luminosity and local metallicity will provide a definitive test of our proposal.

Ultraluminous X–ray Sources and Star Formation

Chandra observations of the Cartwheel galaxy reveal a population of ultraluminous X–ray sources (ULXs) with lifetimes <∼ 10 7 yr associated with a spreading wave of star formation which began some 3 × 10 yr ago. A population of high–mass X–ray binaries provides a simple model: donor stars of initial masses M2 >∼ 15M⊙ transfer mass on their thermal timescales to black holes of masses M1 >∼ 10M⊙....

Protostellar mergers in protoclusters and the origin of ultra-luminous X-ray sources

I suggest that stellar coalescence in mid-size protoclusters (M ∼ 103.5–104.5M⊙) is a possible scenario for the formation of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). More massive superstar-clusters are not needed, since the most likely ULX mass range is only ∼ 30–200M⊙ ; in fact, they are very rarely found at or very near ULX positions. Protostellar envelopes and gas accretion favour captures and me...

Weighing the black holes in ultraluminous X-ray sources through timing

We describe a new method to estimate the mass of black holes in Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs). The method is based on the recently discovered “variability plane”, populated by Galactic stellar-mass black-hole candidates (BHCs) and supermassive active galactic nuclei (AGNs), in the parameter space defined by the black-hole mass, accretion rate and characteristic frequency. We apply this met...

Classifying the zoo of ultraluminous X-ray sources

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are likely to include different physical types of objects. We discuss some possible subclasses, reviewing the properties of a sample of ULXs recently observed by Chandra and XMM-Newton. Sources with an isotropic X-ray luminosity up to a few times 10 erg s are consistent with “normal” stellar-mass X-ray binaries (mostly high-mass X-ray binaries in star-forming ...

External Compton emission from relativistic jets in Galactic black hole candidates and ultraluminous X-ray sources

Galactic binary systems that contain a black hole candidate emit hard X-rays in their low luminosity mode. We show that this emission can be understood as due to the Compton scattering of photons from the companion star and/or the accretion disk by relativistic electrons in a jet. The same electrons are also responsible for the radio emission. Two sources — XTE J1118+480 and Cygnus X-1 — are mo...
